Street Maintenance

Streets in Lewisville are maintained by either the Department of Transportation (DOT) or by the town. The DOT maintains all state roads, including Shallowford, Lewisville-Clemmons, Williams and Lewisville-Vienna. The state will not accept for maintenance local streets within an incorporated community. Therefore, Lewisville is responsible for preserving all publically maintained residential streets. New streets must be built to state standards before being accepted by the town for maintenance. Maintenance includes repairs, improvements and snow and ice removal.

Municipalities receive state money through the Powell Bill. A portion of the gasoline tax collected is returned to municipalities based on the number of miles of roads maintained and the population. While Lewisville receives this money, it is earmarked for street maintenance and associated activities and cannot be used for anything else. Therefore, this service is paid for in part by Powell Bill funds and the rest through property tax.
